Marietta Man Killed in Early Morning I-75 Crash Involving Stopped Tractor Trailer
MARIETTA, Georgia – The Marietta Police Department Selective Traffic Enforcement Program is investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Friday morning on Interstate 75 southbound over North Marietta Parkway.
Police said the collision happened shortly before 1 a.m. in the middle lanes of the interstate bridge.
According to investigators, an unrelated crash earlier in the night had temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of I-75. While traffic remained stopped, a tractor trailer driven by 29-year-old Mayki Marcelin of Davenport, Florida, came to a stop with surrounding traffic on the bridge.
Authorities said that after the roadway reopened and traffic began moving again, Marcelin’s tractor trailer remained stationary in the roadway.
Investigators said a second tractor trailer driven by 35-year-old Daniel Granados of Fort Lauderdale was traveling southbound in the same lane and swerved to avoid the stopped truck, grazing its side while passing on the left.
A white Volkswagen driven by 47-year-old Gordon Fields of Marietta was also traveling southbound and crashed into the rear of the stopped tractor trailer, according to police.
Fields died at the scene from his injuries.
Authorities said both tractor trailer drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators.
No charges have been filed at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.
