Man Indicted for Allegedly Depositing Forged $72K Georgia Lottery Check
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — A Dawson man has been indicted in Bartow County after authorities say he fraudulently deposited a forged check tied to the Georgia Lottery, according to the Georgia Attorney General’s Office.
Jovante Peters, 33, is charged with theft by taking and forgery in the third degree.
Prosecutors allege Peters deposited a forged check from the Georgia Lottery Corporation in the amount of $72,096.25.
The indictment was returned May 4th after evidence was presented to a Bartow County grand jury by the Attorney General’s White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit.
“This case highlights the impact financial crimes can have on programs that benefit Georgia students,” said Chris Carr.
The case was investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Attorney General’s White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit.
Authorities noted that an indictment is a formal accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
