Armed Barricade Suspect Shot and Killed After Exchange of Gunfire With SWAT in Lavonia

LAVONIA, Ga. — An armed and suicidal suspect was shot and killed after opening fire on law enforcement officers during a standoff in Franklin County, authorities said.

The incident began Thursday, April 9, 2026, when the Lavonia Police Department responded to a report involving 30-year-old Alan Chandler, who had been involved in an altercation with a city employee earlier in the day. When officers attempted to arrest him, Chandler refused to comply and was seen with a firearm in his waistband outside his home.

After approximately an hour of negotiations, officers attempted to take Chandler into custody using a Taser, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Chandler retreated inside his residence, where officers reported hearing him loading weapons.

The Lavonia Police Department requested assistance from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, including the Crisis Negotiation Team and State of Georgia SWAT. Upon arrival, SWAT members encountered gunfire from inside the home as Chandler fired multiple rounds at officers.

Authorities said SWAT deployed chemical agents into the residence in an effort to force Chandler out. During that time, Chandler continued firing at officers.

Chandler later exited the front door armed with a weapon and again opened fire on SWAT members and other officers at the scene. Law enforcement personnel returned fire, striking Chandler.

SWAT medics immediately provided medical aid, but Chandler was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were reported injured.

In accordance with state policy, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been notified and is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
