Officer-Involved Shooting in Lawrenceville Leaves Knife-Wielding Suspect Dead
LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – Gwinnett County Police officers assigned to the Central Precinct responded to a reported stabbing that escalated into an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Lawrenceville.
At approximately 3:44 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call reporting a domestic violence incident at a residence on Oaktree Park Court. The caller advised that an individual inside the home was armed with a knife and attempting to stab him, adding that he had already suffered a hand injury.
When officers arrived, they parked several houses away and began approaching the residence on foot. As two officers neared the home, the suspect exited the residence holding a knife above his head in an offensive manner.
Officers issued repeated commands for the suspect to drop the weapon. However, the suspect continued advancing toward them, ignoring efforts to de-escalate the situation. As the suspect closed the distance, both officers discharged their firearms in self-defense.
Officers immediately began rendering aid until Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services personnel, who were already staged nearby, arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has responded and will be leading the investigation into the incident.
