Cobb County Police Officer Arrested by GBI for Sexual Battery of a Teenage Girl
CANTON, GA — A 47-year-old Cobb County police officer has been arrested and charged with a serious sex crime involving a minor following a four-month investigation.
Withman Benjamin, of Canton, was taken into custody on Friday, January 9, 2026, and charged with one count of Sexual Battery Against a Child Under 16. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) led the probe at the request of the Canton Police Department.
Investigation and Arrest Details
The investigation began in September 2025 after the Canton Police Department received a report of potential child abuse. Due to the sensitive nature of the case and the status of the suspect as a law enforcement officer, the GBI was asked to take the lead.
- The Allegations: According to arrest warrants, Benjamin is accused of touching a girl inappropriately without her consent.
- Employment Status: Benjamin has been an officer with the Cobb County Police Department since February 2019. Following his arrest, he was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the legal process.
- Release: Benjamin was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center and was released the following day after posting a $3,500 bond.

The GBI investigation is currently in its final stages. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for formal prosecution.
