Venezuelan Citizen Charged with Possession of Fraudulent Green Card to Remain in Federal Custody

At a detention hearing this morning, a Venezuelan citizen accused of possessing a fraudulent green card will stay in federal custody as requested by the Government.

Diego Ibarra, 28, hailing from Venezuela, faces charges outlined in a criminal complaint for possession of a fraudulent document. If found guilty, Ibarra could potentially serve a maximum of ten years in prison. U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Weigle ruled that Ibarra will be detained pending trial, citing concerns about the defendant’s potential to flee.

The investigation into this case is being led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with support from the FBI, GBI, Athens-Clarke County Police Department, University of Georgia Police Department, and Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Morrison is spearheading the prosecution of the case.
