Two Fatal Accidents Rock Rome in 18-Hour Span

The Rome Police Department is investigating two separate fatal accidents that occurred within an 18-hour period, prompting a public awareness alert.

Shorter Avenue / S. Hughes Street – Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Fatality

On Friday, September 12, 2025, at 10:04 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at the intersection of Shorter Avenue and South Hughes Street. Despite immediate medical intervention, the pedestrian, Sandra Hernandez, age 60 of Rome, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate Ms. Hernandez entered the roadway from North Hughes Street when she was struck by a vehicle.

North Broad Street / North Avenue – Multi-Vehicle Collision Claims Two Lives

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:45 a.m., officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of North Broad Street and North Avenue.
