Work-Release Inmate Arrested for Gwinnett Co-Op Burglary

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga.—A man serving a work-release sentence for prior burglary convictions has been arrested for a new burglary at the North Gwinnett Co-Operative.

The Gwinnett County Police Department reported that on August 19, at approximately 6:30 a.m., the co-operative on Commerce Drive was burglarized, with surveillance footage showing a male suspect breaking in through a window and stealing several hundred dollars in cash.

Investigators identified the suspect as Lavan Hickman, 38, of Clarkston. They discovered that Hickman was currently serving a work-release sentence at the Gwinnett County Correctional Institute for burglary convictions from 2024. Authorities determined that he had left the facility on work release before committing the August 19 burglary.

Hickman now faces two additional charges: burglary and criminal damage to property in the second degree.
