Body of Missing Albany Public Works Employee Found in Flint River

The body discovered in the Flint River near the Baker-Mitchell County line on Sunday has been identified as Darrious Stephens, an Albany Public Works employee who went missing on Monday, Feb. 12.

Albany city officials confirmed Stephens’s identity. He was last seen taking water samples from the river during heavy rainfall.

Stephens’s body was found by Department of Natural Resources (DNR) crews around 10:45 a.m., approximately two miles south of Punk’s Landing, according to Albany Fire Chief Cedric Scott.

Despite the recovery occurring 20 days after Stephens went missing, divers were not needed as his remains were visible due to the lower water level, Chief Scott explained.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler stated that the cause of Stephens’s death is still under investigation. The GBI crime lab will determine the manner of his death.

Meanwhile, search efforts are ongoing for Cameron Jones, 23, who disappeared on Monday, Feb. 26, after reportedly jumping into the river, according to witnesses.

Search operations for Jones involve boats equipped with sonar, crews scouring the riverbanks, and the use of a drone. Divers are prepared to assist if necessary.

Georgia Power has maintained lowered water levels to aid search teams in their efforts.
