TALIAFERRO COUNTY, GA — Chief Deputy Chris Treadwell of the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office is suspended without pay for a minimum of 14 days following his arrest for boating under the influence on Clarks Hill Lake in McDuffie County on July 5, 2025. In addition to the suspension, Treadwell will face a reduction in rank and reassignment upon his return to duty.

Sheriff Tia M. McWilliams received a resignation notice from Treadwell late on July 5, which read, “I render my services as of right now. I’M SORRY!” This came shortly after the Georgia Department of Natural Resources informed her of Treadwell’s arrest. Treadwell was cited for operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and operating a boat without lights at night. His family was reportedly on the boat during the incident. Treadwell was booked into McDuffie County Jail and later released on bond.

On July 6, Sheriff McWilliams spoke with Treadwell, who expressed deep remorse for his actions and the impact on both his family and the Sheriff’s Office. He explained his decision to resign, saying, “How can I be out here arresting people when I myself have been arrested?” The Sheriff accepted his resignation but encouraged him to face the consequences and assured him that the department supports accountability and offers a path forward for those who make mistakes.

However, on July 11, Treadwell requested a meeting with the Sheriff to rescind his resignation. McWilliams granted the request and placed him on administrative leave pending a full internal investigation.

The investigation was completed on July 17. According to the report from McDuffie County Jail and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Treadwell was cooperative, honest, and forthcoming throughout the process. The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council was notified of the incident on July 7.

Effective immediately, Treadwell’s suspension without pay began and will last for at least 14 days. Upon returning, he will be reassigned and demoted. Sheriff McWilliams reaffirmed her commitment to leading with integrity, accountability, and compassion. She emphasized the importance of honesty and humility within the department and stated that while no one is above the law, there is room for redemption when individuals take responsibility for their actions.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for its understanding and support during the incident.
