Wrecker Driver Ejected, Fire Breaks Out After Train Collision in Union City

n July 9th at approximately 2:25 p.m., Union City Fire & Emergency Services, along with the City of South Fulton Fire Department, responded to a collision involving a large vehicle and a train. Initial 911 calls indicated possible entrapment.

Upon arrival, first responders confirmed there was no entrapment. The driver of the heavy wrecker had been ejected from the vehicle due to the impact. He was treated on scene by South Fulton Fire crews and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by Grady EMS. A passenger sustained minor injuries and exited the vehicle without assistance. The locomotive crew was unharmed.

Due to the size and complexity of the scene, fire operations were split into two divisions:

  • Division 1 (Union City Fire): Focused on extinguishing heavy fire and managing burning, leaking fuel from the train.
  • Division 2 (South Fulton Fire): Extinguished multiple smaller fires along the track and handled initial medical treatment.

Fairburn Fire’s Tanker 24 provided water support, enabling sustained fire suppression throughout the operation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
