Fireworks Incident Leads to Multiple Arrests in Downtown Columbus

On Friday, July 4, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to a disturbance on Broadway where large mortar-style fireworks and Roman candles were being discharged toward families and outdoor diners.

Officers detained two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, who were found carrying backpacks filled with fireworks. While detaining the teens, an adult female interfered, physically resisted arrest, and was taken into custody without injury.

Two unrelated individuals filming the incident were also arrested after ignoring commands to maintain a safe distance, citing officer safety and the presence of minors. Shortly after, several adults—identified as relatives of the juveniles—arrived and were informed the teens would be released into their custody. However, upon learning the interfering adult would be transported to jail, multiple individuals attempted to remove her from police custody and refused commands, leading to additional arrests. Two adults were charged after allegedly grabbing officers and trying to stop ongoing arrests.

A fire caused by the discharged fireworks was reported next to a downtown building but was quickly extinguished.

Earlier in the evening, police responded to other fireworks-related complaints near large crowds, including a report of gunfire and a vehicle damaged in the Bay Avenue area. The same group of teens later moved to the Broadway area, continuing the disruptive activity.

In total, seven adults were arrested and face charges including Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction, both misdemeanor and felony. Two juveniles were charged with Reckless Conduct and Obstruction.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. S. Hayes at 706-225-4268 or shayes@columbusga.org.
