Seven Individuals Charged in 44-Count Indictment for Gang-Related Activities in South Georgia

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr and Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Bradfield M. Shealy announced the indictment of seven individuals in Lowndes County, Georgia, on February 26, 2025, for their alleged involvement in a series of violent crimes linked to the 528 street gang. The 44-count indictment accuses the defendants of conspiring to violate the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, engaging in criminal activities such as murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and firearm-related offenses in Lowndes County, Colquitt County, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida.

The indictment includes the 2023 shooting deaths of Jaylon Smith, 21, and Brianna Long, 21, a Valdosta State University student, as part of the defendants’ ongoing criminal enterprise. The defendants are alleged to have committed 97 overt acts in furtherance of the conspiracy.

The case will be jointly prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Gang Prosecution Unit and the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

“This case represents a firm stand against gang violence and a commitment to holding those responsible fully accountable,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “We will not allow this cycle of danger and devastation to continue, and we will not rest until those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions.”

District Attorney Bradfield M. Shealy emphasized the impact of gang violence on the community: “Most of the murders that have recently occurred in Valdosta over the past couple of years have been gang-related. Gang violence does not just affect gang members but also innocent members of our community.”

The investigation, which led to the indictment, was spearheaded by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Remerton Police Department, with the assistance of multiple local and federal agencies.

“We remain committed to working with our partners to track down and hold accountable those who engage in gang activity in Georgia,” said GBI Director Chris Hosey.
