Georgia Senators Secure Over Million for Bibb County Road and Pedestrian Safety Improvements

U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) have announced more than $37 million in federal funding for road safety enhancements across Georgia. This funding aims to bolster safety for bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers, and to improve connectivity between communities.

The latest federal investment will fund the construction of new streets, pathways, and bridges, enhancing travel safety and overall quality of life for Georgians. Additionally, it will support local governments in developing comprehensive safety action plans to access further funding opportunities.

Macon-Bibb County will receive $5,630,440 to improve Gray Highway and develop the East Macon Loop. This multimodal access trail will connect East Macon residents to services, recreation areas, and Downtown. The project includes adding 1 mile of new sidewalks on Gray Highway, 3 miles of multi-use paths on Old Clinton Road and Boulevard, installation of street lighting, and modernization of crosswalk signals. These improvements aim to address pedestrian and bicyclist safety issues and reduce pedestrian fatalities in the area.

Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller expressed gratitude for the funding, noting its significance in enhancing pedestrian safety on one of the county’s busiest roads. District 3 Commissioner Elaine Lucas also praised the investment, highlighting the contributions of the Pedestrian Safety Review Board in prioritizing the project.

Senator Warnock remarked on the importance of safer streets, emphasizing that the funding reflects efforts to protect lives and strengthen community connectivity. The funds are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which established the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The SS4A program aims to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries through competitive grants, supporting the Department of Transportation’s National Roadway Safety Strategy.
