Christmas Eve Fire in Athens: Firefighters Rescue Occupant from Blaze
ATHENS, GA – On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, Athens-Clarke County Fire Department crews responded to a residential fire in the 600 block of North Avenue at approximately 10:40 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire engulfing roughly 80% of the one-story home. Rescue and engine crews quickly coordinated suppression efforts while simultaneously conducting a search for occupants. Using a thermal imaging camera, Rescue 4’s crew located a resident inside the structure and safely removed them. The patient was handed over to Engine 21 personnel and then transported by National EMS to Piedmont Athens Regional, later transferred to Augusta Burn Center.
Firefighters continued extinguishment operations and systematically searched the remainder of the home, confirming all other occupants were safe.
“This incident highlights the importance of coordinated fire attack, rapid decision-making, and selfless teamwork,” said Chief Nate Moss. “Because of the quick actions of our firefighters, a person was located, and life-saving efforts were made under extremely challenging conditions.”
The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze. Anyone with information is asked to contact Captain Kevin Kearney at 706-613-3365.
