Paulding County Investigators Use Advanced DNA Testing To Identify Remains Found in 2021
2021 John Doe identified as Thomas Joe Kratzer

Paulding County, GA – December 5, 2025 – Paulding County authorities have identified skeletal remains discovered in 2021 as those of Thomas Joe Kratzer, a man reported missing more than a decade earlier.

Kratzer, born January 18, 1959, was reported missing by his family in February 2014 after they had not heard from him since the fall of 2013. He was entered into the GCIC/NCIC database, but the case saw no significant developments for years.

On September 22, 2021, a property owner preparing land for a new home found skeletal remains, prompting a response from Uniform Patrol deputies. Detectives and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted a detailed search and recovered a skull and several bones. No identification or signs of trauma were found, and the remains were listed in NAMUS as unidentified.

Forensic analysis by the GBI determined the remains belonged to a white male between 24 and 60 years old, but comparisons to missing persons cases failed to produce a match.

In 2023, the remains were sent to Othram, a laboratory specializing in advanced forensic DNA work. Initial requests for federal funding were denied because investigators had no indication of foul play. In 2025, the Cold Case Unit, with help from the District Attorney’s Office, used funds seized from a criminal enterprise to move forward with genetic testing.

Othram’s analysis produced a presumptive match to Thomas Joe Kratzer, which was later confirmed through a DNA sample from his sister.

“This identification brings long-awaited answers to the Kratzer family,” Sheriff Henson said. “It also demonstrates the dedication of our Cold Case Unit and our commitment to using every tool available to bring closure to families.”
