Suspect Shot After Firing at Deputies Near Crisp County High School; GBI Investigating
Cordele, GA – A suspect who reportedly posed a potential threat to a Crisp County High School employee was shot Friday afternoon after firing at deputies during a foot chase, according to the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.
Earlier in the day, deputies and investigators received information about a suspect believed to be traveling to Crisp County to pick up an employee at the high school. In response, law enforcement immediately established a secure perimeter around the school around 2:30 p.m. to protect students, staff, and the surrounding community.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., deputies spotted the suspect’s vehicle traveling along Frontage Road. The suspect pulled into a nearby hotel parking lot, where deputies attempted to make contact. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect fled on foot, running across Frontage Road toward an unoccupied shopping complex.
During the pursuit, the suspect brandished a weapon and fired at deputies, who returned fire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting and is currently processing the scene.
Prior to deputies confronting the suspect, Crisp County School Superintendent Dr. Williams was notified of the potential threat. Following the incident, the teacher involved was taken into custody at Crisp County High School and transported to the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Crisp County School System and the GBI for their cooperation and rapid response.
Additional details, including the suspect’s identity and condition, will be released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as the investigation develops.
