Inmate Recaptured After Assaulting Officer and Attempted Escape in Cordele

Cordele, GA – On Thursday night, October 16, 2025, shortly after 10:00 p.m., an inmate with the Georgia Department of Corrections, serving a sentence for murder, assaulted a corrections officer with pepper spray and fled from a transport van near 8th Avenue and 3rd Street.
Cordele Police Officers, Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Georgia State Troopers responded immediately. A citizen’s 911 call reporting the suspect’s last known location near 3rd Street Baptist Church helped officers establish a perimeter. The inmate was quickly located hiding behind bushes at the church and was taken into custody without further incident.
The escaped inmate was returned to the Georgia Department of Corrections. Authorities praised the swift coordination between agencies and the citizen who provided crucial information.
