Glynn County Man Arrested After Motel 6 Shootout and Standoff

Glynn County Police say a 58-year-old man is facing a long list of charges after firing at officers, barricading himself inside a motel room, and being found with firearms and narcotics.
Just after midnight on August 30, 2025, patrol officers responded to a welfare check at the Motel 6 on Scarlett Street involving a possible domestic violence victim. When officers attempted to check on the situation, the suspect — identified as David Kevin Griffis — fired several shots at them with a handgun. Three officers returned fire, forcing Griffis back inside the room where he barricaded himself.
A perimeter was established, and crisis negotiators attempted to talk him out. After Griffis refused to surrender, the GCPD SWAT team deployed CS/OC gas into the room and swiftly took him into custody. Griffis was treated at a local hospital for gas inhalation but sustained no gunshot wounds. No officers were injured during the incident.
Chief Scott Ebner contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to review the officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, GCPD detectives began investigating the aggravated assault, and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative review of policies.
Griffis has been charged with:
- Four counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
- Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Crimes
Investigators also executed a search warrant on his motel room, seizing:
- 28 grams of marijuana
- 10 grams of fentanyl, plus 10 additional packaged fentanyl units
- 14 grams of crack cocaine
- 0.8 grams of cocaine
- 14 grams of methamphetamine
- Various prescription pills
- Two handguns
Additional drug-related charges are expected as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Glynn County Police Department at (912) 554-3645 or Silent Witness at (912) 264-1333.
