Mother and Son Arrested in 2023 Lumpkin Road Murder Case in Richmond County

RICHMOND COUNTY, GA — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the 2023 murder of James Brinson.
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., investigators with the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, along with the Crime Suppression Team and the U.S. Marshal Southeastern Fugitive Task Force, arrested Mikeem Gaines, 22, and his mother, Garnett Gaines, 45, both residents of the 2800 block of Lumpkin Road in Augusta, GA.
The charges stem from a June 17, 2023, incident that occurred around 8:06 a.m. at 2823 Lumpkin Road, where Brinson, 42, of the 2000 block of Wharton Drive, was killed. Both suspects have been charged with one count of murder and were booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
Booking photos for the Gaineses were not immediately available due to their recent commitment to the jail. The Sheriff’s Office said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
