Atlanta Police Officer Fired, Arrested on Rape and False Imprisonment Charges

ATLANTA, GA—An Atlanta Police officer has been arrested and fired following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault that occurred in June.
On August 21, Officer Muhammad Muhammad was arrested at Atlanta Police headquarters on charges of rape and false imprisonment. According to an Atlanta Police incident report from June 8, a female victim came forward to report a sexual assault that occurred two days earlier. The victim stated she had arranged to meet an individual identifying himself as Muhammad Muhammad to provide massage services for a fee.
The victim alleges that during the session, the suspect became aggressive and physically touched her, despite her stating her services were not sexual. She claims the suspect then sexually assaulted her, including non-consensual penetration. The suspect then allegedly threatened her with a firearm and reclaimed the payment for the massage before leaving.
Detectives with the Atlanta Police Special Victims Unit, working with the department’s Office of Professional Standards, launched an investigation. Officer Muhammad was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
Following a disciplinary hearing on August 21, Chief Darin Schierbaum terminated Muhammad’s employment. Muhammad was then transported to the Fulton County Jail.
In a statement, Chief Schierbaum said, “The Atlanta Police Department remains committed to serving its residents and holding its employees to the highest standards. We have been clear, no one is above the law, including members of our own Department. These allegations are deeply troubling and run counter to the values and expectations of our agency.”
The investigation is ongoing.
