Macon-Bibb County Posts $11.8 Million in New Road Improvement RFPs

MACON, GA – Macon-Bibb County has announced a significant acceleration of its “Paving the Way” road improvement program, posting four new Request for Proposals (RFPs) for major projects totaling nearly $12 million. The new RFPs, funded by the 2018 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and state Local Maintenance & Improvement Grants (LMIG), will cover 36.18 miles of road across the county.
“We plan on moving forward even faster with our Paving the Way program, and I expect to see major improvements on these roads beginning in October,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “The condition of our roads is one of our community’s top priorities, and we are putting more money toward it than ever before.”
According to County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett, the roads selected for this round were identified in a recent county-wide study as being the “worst in the county.” With the completion of these projects, all roads rated a 3 or higher on the county’s 1-5 scale will have been addressed.
This announcement comes after the voters of Macon-Bibb County approved the renewal of the SPLOST in March 2025. This renewal, combined with the General Fund and state LMIG funds, is making up to $50 million available for future road improvements.
The county is already preparing to develop five more RFPs based on a new road condition scan conducted earlier this year. In preparation for this historic funding, Mayor Miller is encouraging local contractors and subcontractors to sign up to do business with the county by reaching out to the Officer of Small Business Affairs (OSBA).
Since the program’s inception, nearly $15 million was allocated in the first round, a figure almost five times greater than previous years. Between 2020 and now, the county has repaved 45.539 miles of road.
