Youth Police Academy Participants Get Hands-On Training in Public Safety and Mental Health Awareness

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – On Tuesday, July 8, high school students participating in the Gwinnett County Police Department’s Youth Police Academy received in-depth exposure to key aspects of law enforcement and public safety through a series of interactive demonstrations and discussions.

The day began with a presentation from the department’s Hazardous Devices Unit, showcasing specialized equipment and techniques officers use to handle potentially dangerous scenarios involving suspicious items or explosives.

Students then observed a Taser demonstration, learning how non-lethal tools are used to de-escalate confrontations. The session was followed by hands-on Defensive Tactics training, where participants practiced techniques for managing physical altercations safely.

Later, students engaged with MILO, a high-tech interactive simulator that replicates real-world policing scenarios, challenging them to make rapid decisions under pressure.

In the afternoon, Gwinnett United in Drug Education, Inc. (GUIDE) led a candid conversation on mental health and teen drug use. Organizers say the dialogue offered valuable insight into the impact of substance abuse and the importance of early intervention and support.

To conclude the day, members of the Criminal Investigations Division walked students through real-life cases, emphasizing the complexity and attention to detail required in solving crimes.

The Youth Police Academy program aims to foster understanding between law enforcement and the community while providing students with a behind-the-scenes look at the duties and responsibilities of police officers.
