Atlanta Airport Introduces Innovia 300R Trains to Boost Speed and Capacity

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has announced the introduction of Innovia 300R vehicles to its Automated People Mover (APM) system, known as the Plane Train, marking a major step in the airport’s modernization efforts.

The Plane Train, which began operating in 1980 with 17 Innovia CX100 vehicles, currently operates with 59 cars. As part of the Plane Train Tunnel West Extension project, ATL will add 14 Innovia 300R vehicles to the system by the end of March 2026, bringing the total fleet to 73.

“These new vehicles are not only energy-efficient and sustainable, but they are also a testament to our dedication to meeting and exceeding the evolving needs of our passengers and the aviation industry,” said Ana Maria Taroco, ATL’s Assistant General Manager for Planning and Development.

The upgraded fleet is expected to improve both efficiency and passenger experience. The new trains will increase hourly transport capacity in each direction from 10,000 to 12,000 passengers. In addition, wait times between trains will be reduced from 108 seconds to 90 seconds.

The Innovia 300R models offer both driverless operation and manual override capabilities and will gradually replace the aging CX100 units in the coming years.

ATL, the world’s busiest airport, served over 108 million passengers last year. The fleet expansion is part of ATL’s broader commitment to sustainability, technology, and improved passenger service.
