Macon Mayor to Announce Historic Road Improvement Investments

Mayor Miller and the County Commissioners will hold a press conference on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. to detail significant progress in an unprecedented investment in road improvements across the county.
Mayor Miller emphasized the long-standing need for infrastructure repair, stating, “For too many years, there were never enough funds made available to care for our aging infrastructure, leading to potholes, sinkholes, collapses along the sides, and failing pavement. Now, thanks to the SPLOST, the Commission and I intend to put an historic amount toward correcting that mistake.”
In March 2025, Macon-Bibb County voters approved the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), which will allocate $50 million for the next phase of “Paving the Way,” the county’s comprehensive road repair, maintenance, and restriping program. This substantial funding will be further augmented by resources from the General Fund and state Local Maintenance & Improvement Grants (LMIG). The initial phase of Paving the Way already allocated nearly $15 million from these sources, an amount almost five times greater than previous annual allocations.
“The condition of our roads has become one of the top priorities for our community, and I join with people in their frustration with uneven pavement, potholes that rattle your car, and stripes you can’t see at night,” said Mayor Miller. “That’s why we made sure people knew this would be at the top of our list when it came to this next SPLOST, and it’s the first project we’re moving forward with.”
To strategically plan for this historic level of funding, the county has completed a comprehensive scan of over 1,100 county-owned paved roads to assess their condition. This data, expected in June, will be used to prioritize the roads in the worst condition for immediate repair.
“Since we began the Paving the Way program, we have used a data-driven approach to fix the worst roads first, and we are about to have a re-evaluation of all our roads to help prioritize and speed up that process,” added Mayor Miller. “This amount of effort will take the work of many crews and companies, and we will be discussing Monday how we are going to make that happen.”
The press conference is expected to provide further details on the timeline, specific projects, and the logistical plans for executing this significant investment in Macon-Bibb County’s road infrastructure.
