GBI Investigates Fatal Paulding County Shooting; Deputy Injured

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Paulding County that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Jameel Johnson of Dallas, Georgia. One Paulding County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured during the incident. The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct the investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Paulding County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a residence on Hemlock Glen in Dallas, GA, for a welfare check. Upon entering the home, Johnson’s mother led deputies to a bedroom where Johnson was located. Johnson’s mother reportedly took a rifle away from Johnson.

When deputies entered the bedroom, Johnson allegedly fired a handgun multiple times towards them, striking one deputy. Other deputies on the scene returned fire, hitting Johnson.

Johnson died as a result of his injuries. His body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Upon completion, the case file will be submitted to the Paulding County District Attorney’s Office for review.
