DA Responds to Misinformation in Paulding County Manslaughter Case
PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — The Paulding Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office issued a statement addressing what it says is misinformation surrounding a recently concluded homicide case.
According to District Attorney Robert S. Lane, the case involving Oscar Vega-Aguirre resulted in a manslaughter conviction following a non-negotiated guilty plea.
Prosecutors said the deceased individual was committing an armed robbery at the time of the incident. Officials stated that the defendant initiated the altercation, which is why self-defense did not apply under Georgia law.
The defendant pleaded guilty without a sentencing agreement, meaning the court determined the punishment after hearing arguments from both sides and considering a victim impact statement.
The court sentenced Vega-Aguirre to 20 years, with nine years to be served in prison.
Officials also confirmed the defendant has an immigration detainer and a removal order. After completing his prison sentence, he is expected to be transferred to federal custody and deported. Authorities said a bar order is in place for the duration of the 20-year sentence, meaning he would face immediate arrest if he returns to Georgia during that time.
The District Attorney’s Office emphasized that the defendant has remained in custody and was never released.
“At no point was the defendant released,” the statement said, adding that claims suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.
Officials said the statement was issued to clarify facts and reaffirm the office’s commitment to transparency and accurate public information.
