Suspect Fleeing Traffic Stop Dies After Entering Salem Lake

A suspect who fled a traffic stop early Sunday morning and entered Salem Lake in an attempt to evade deputies has died.
On Sunday, April 13, 2025, at approximately 2:35 AM, Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies initiated a traffic stop near Old Salem Road and Underwood Road. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot, leading to a pursuit. The suspect then entered Salem Lake.
After swimming across the lake, the suspect re-entered the water and refused multiple commands to come out. Deputies subsequently lost sight of the individual.
A search was immediately launched involving Rockdale County Fire Rescue (RCFD) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Due to poor visibility and unsafe conditions, the search was suspended until daybreak. At daybreak, the search resumed with the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
At approximately 7 PM, the suspect’s body was recovered from the lake. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office has stated that this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
