Richmond County Investigator Prevents Suicide Attempt on 5th Street Bridge

A Richmond County investigator successfully prevented a suicide attempt on the 5th Street pedestrian bridge Friday afternoon, following a nearly three-hour negotiation.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 28, multiple agencies, including the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department, Central EMS, North Augusta Public Safety, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, responded to a report of an individual threatening to jump from the bridge.

Investigator Tim Owen, a veteran officer with over 23 years of crisis negotiation experience, engaged in conversation with the individual and ultimately convinced them to step down. The individual was turned over to the proper authorities for care and assistance.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley praised the coordinated response, stating, “We are thankful for the cooperation from our neighboring and state agencies. Together, we worked toward a successful outcome, ensuring the individual received the care they needed. This collaborative effort highlights the dedication and commitment of all involved in serving and protecting our community.”

The case remains under review, and no further details have been released.
