Oconee County Investigates Apparent Murder-Suicide

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths of two individuals at a residence on Mars Hill Road, following a welfare check on March 24, 2025.

Deputies responded to the residence after a family member reported not having heard from their loved one for an extended period. Upon arrival, a deputy observed Mitchell Oldham entering the home. Upon approaching the residence, the deputy discovered Douglas Oldham deceased near the front.

Due to the unknown circumstances, backup was requested. After securing the scene, attempts to contact any other occupants were made. When these attempts failed, the Athens-Clarke County Strategic Response Team (SRT) was called for assistance. A drone deployed inside the residence located Mitchell Oldham, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The scene was then turned over to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Investigations for processing.

Sheriff James A. Hale Jr. expressed condolences to the family and thanked the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for their assistance. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.
