Handcuffed Man Attempts Escape During Transport in Camden County

A Camden County deputy encountered a dangerous situation on Friday, January 31, 2025, when an individual being transported from Camden Medical Center to Waycross Mental Health slipped out of handcuffs and attempted to escape.

The individual managed to reach through the vehicle’s partition and grabbed the deputy’s face before kicking the vehicle’s door in an effort to break free. The deputy quickly pulled over in front of a Walgreens and called for backup.

Deputies from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Kingsland Police Department and St. Marys Police Department, responded and worked together to safely restrain the individual. The transport continued without further incident.

Sheriff Kevin Chaney emphasized the importance of mental health resources and credited teamwork among law enforcement agencies for ensuring a safe resolution. Authorities acknowledged public concern over the large police response but reassured the community that it was necessary to de-escalate the situation.
