GBI Investigating Inmate Death at Chatham County Jail

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the death of a Chatham County Jail inmate at the request of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., 24-year-old Marquan Nazarus Bryant of Savannah, Georgia, was found unresponsive in his cell. Jail officers and emergency medical technicians attempted life-saving measures before transporting Bryant to a local hospital, where he was placed on life support.

Bryant was removed from life support on Thursday, January 23, 2025, and was pronounced dead by medical staff.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler is conducting an autopsy to determine Bryant’s cause and manner of death.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
