Two Arrested After Attempted Contraband Drop Near Washington State Prison

On Sunday, November 17, 2024, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office thwarted an attempted contraband drop near Washington State Prison, resulting in the arrest of two men. The incident followed a previous seizure of illegal drugs and contraband in the area on Saturday evening near Davisboro.

Deputies had been alerted to a possible contraband drop when they set up a perimeter near the prison. They soon encountered two males walking along GA Highway 231, north of Davisboro. After investigating the individuals, deputies discovered they were in possession of four bottles of prescription cough/cold syrup (Promethazine Hydrochloride), along with additional contraband.

The two suspects, identified as Ziad Burrell, 18, of Jonesboro, and Tyshaun Banks, 21, also of Jonesboro, were arrested and charged with Crossing Guard Lines with Drugs Without Consent of the Warden, Trading with Inmates, and Possession of a Schedule III Substance With Intent to Distribute.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reiterated its commitment to preventing contraband from entering Washington State Prison, emphasizing the role of enhanced security measures, technology, and staff training in maintaining safety within the facility and the community.
