Firefighters Battle Winterville House Fire, Roof Collapses

On October 29th, 2024, at around 5:00 p.m., Athens-Clarke County B-Shift firefighters responded to a heavily involved house fire in Winterville, GA (Athens-Clarke County). Upon arrival, crews initiated an aggressive attack on the main body of fire located in the garage. Conditions quickly deteriorated as flames spread, and subsequent units moved to interior positions. However, after a roof collapse, crews had to withdraw and adopt a defensive approach to contain the blaze.

One resident, who was reportedly asleep at the time, managed to escape uninjured, emphasizing the importance of working smoke detectors. It remains unclear if the home had active fire alarms at the time.

Fire units Engine 26, Engine 25, Engine 29, Ladder 1, Ladder 7, Rescue 4, Winterville 1, Car 31, and Car 34 responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
