GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting That Left Dalton Man Dead

GBI agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Alicia Mayorga-Rangel of Dalton, following a response to a domestic incident. At approximately 11:35 p.m. on September 20, 2024, Whitfield County 911 dispatched a deputy to a residence in the 1400 block of Ninety-Seven Springs Road after Mayorga-Rangel’s wife reported that he was hallucinating and attempting to harm himself.

As the deputy approached the front door, he heard commotion inside. Upon opening the door, Mayorga-Rangel charged at the deputy, who issued verbal commands for him to stop. When Mayorga-Rangel continued to advance, the deputy deployed his Taser, which proved ineffective. Mayorga-Rangel, appearing agitated and growling, charged at the deputy with his hands raised in a fighting stance. The deputy fired multiple shots, striking Mayorga-Rangel, who fell to the ground but continued to struggle with responding officers and EMTs providing aid. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A GBI medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on Mayorga-Rangel in Decatur, GA. The GBI will carry out its independent investigation into the incident. No deputies were reported injured during the altercation.
