DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston has announced a conviction in the case against 30-year-old Dequan Trimell King, who was found guilty of multiple charges related to the 2019 shooting death of Brandon McCrary.
On Thursday, August 29, jurors convicted King on charges of Malice Murder, three counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The charges stemmed from the fatal shooting of McCrary, which occurred on September 22, 2019.
The incident took place at McCrary’s apartment in the 4000 block of Waldrop Place in unincorporated Decatur. DeKalb County Police Department officers responded to a call about an armed robbery at approximately 7:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they interviewed three witnesses. According to their statements, Daizona Allen, 25, rang McCrary’s doorbell. When McCrary opened the door, King was outside with a handgun, and additional suspects emerged from the back of the building. McCrary was forced into his apartment, where he was subsequently shot and killed.
The witnesses, who fled the scene, called 911. Following the verdict, Senior Judge David B. Irwin sentenced King to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.
Co-Defendant Daizona Allen was indicted by a DeKalb County Grand Jury on August 2, 2021, on charges of Malice Murder, two counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery. Allen remains in jail awaiting trial.
The case was prosecuted by the Homicide and Gangs Unit, with Det. Kershaw of the DeKalb County Police Department leading the investigation.
