14-Year-Old Fleeing Police Pursuit Struck and Killed While Crossing State Highway 288 in Pearland
On August 28, 2024, at 9:50 P.M., a Pearland Police Department officer was pursuing a vehicle in the 14000 block of State Highway 288 northbound. The driver, later identified as a 14-year-old male, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the center concrete barrier. Following the crash, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, fled on foot, running westbound across the main lanes of State Highway 288, including the HOV lane, towards the southbound lanes. The officer lost sight of the suspect as he fled the crash scene.
Approximately five minutes after the officer lost sight of the suspect, Pearland Dispatch received reports of an auto-pedestrian accident in the southbound lanes of State Highway 288. Officers responded to the scene and discovered that the individual who had fled the earlier crash had been struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the southbound lanes.
Pearland Police Department officers administered CPR at the scene, and the injured male was transported by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
