The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) Unit has arrested a suspect following a vehicle pursuit that led to the assault of a law enforcement officer. The incident occurred after deputies attempted a traffic stop on Broadway on Saturday evening.

On August 24, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies observed a Ford Expedition traveling south on Broadway with its high beam headlights improperly illuminated. Further checks revealed that the vehicle’s registration had been canceled and it had no valid insurance. When deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, initiating a brief pursuit. During the chase, the driver intentionally rammed a deputy’s patrol vehicle head-on. The suspect then fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by deputies. One deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and was transported to a medical facility for treatment.

The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Matthew Eric Harper of Macon. Harper was also taken to a medical facility for treatment of minor injuries. After receiving medical attention, Harper was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. He is facing multiple charges, including Felony Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement Officers, Felony Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, and other traffic and equipment violations.

Matthew Eric Harper is currently being held without bond.
