GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Toccoa, Georgia; Suspect at Large

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Toccoa, Georgia, at the request of the Toccoa Police Department. The incident involves Montavious Cantrell Winkfield, 37, of Toccoa, who is currently wanted in connection with the case. No officers were injured.
Preliminary information indicates that on Monday, July 1, 2024, around 2:10 p.m., Toccoa Police Department officers stopped a vehicle near Diagonal Street. Winkfield exited the vehicle and began shooting at the officers. An officer returned fire, and Winkfield fled the scene. He remains at large.
The Toccoa Police Department has issued warrants for Winkfield’s arrest on two counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement officers. Authorities are actively working to locate and apprehend him. The investigation is ongoing. Once completed, the case file will be submitted to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
