Suspect Shot by Savannah Police After Alleged Theft, GBI Investigate

At the request of the Savannah Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Ogeechee Road. The incident involved 29-year-old Quayshon Whitehurst from Hinesville, GA, who was shot by police but is reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital.

The events unfolded when officers responded to a theft report at Mary Jane’s CBD Dispensary. Preliminary findings suggest Whitehurst had taken a backpack from a store employee and left the scene. Later, officers located him across the street behind the Circle K convenience store. When approached by an officer and instructed to stop, Whitehurst allegedly drew a firearm and fired at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking Whitehurst.

Officers administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived, who then transported Whitehurst to the hospital. GBI agents have subsequently charged Whitehurst with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and felony obstruction.

The GBI continues to investigate independently, and upon completion, findings will be forwarded to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. Savannah Police are also continuing their investigation into the initial theft report.
