Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident in Athens-Clarke County Leads to Arrest of Young Man

On Tuesday, April 30th, at around 3:40 am, an Athens-Clarke County Police Officer was on West Broad Street near Beech Haven Church in Athens-Clarke County. At that time, the officer heard the sound of a vehicle crash. Upon investigation, they discovered an unresponsive pedestrian, identified as Michael Kitchen, 34, of Madison, GA, lying in the roadway. Kitchen was rushed to a local hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

The vehicle involved in the incident had fled the scene, prompting an investigation by authorities. However, the driver was later located and arrested. Identified as Benhur Tesfai, 21, of Lilburn, GA, he now faces charges including DUI, Vehicular Homicide 1st degree, and Hit & Run.
