Driver Fatally Shot after Confrontation with Snellville Police

In the early hours of Saturday, March 23, 2024, a dramatic incident unfolded on US 78 (West Main Street) at Fountain Drive, involving the Snellville Police Department. At approximately 4:00 a.m., officers conducted a routine traffic stop that took a dangerous turn.

According to initial reports, during the course of the traffic stop, the officer informed the driver of the need for an arrest and instructed the individual to exit the vehicle. However, upon opening the car door, the driver brandished a handgun and aimed it at his head.

Efforts were made by officers at the scene to engage in dialogue with the driver, urging him to lower his weapon. Despite these efforts, the driver proceeded to discharge his firearm. In response, officers present returned fire.

The driver sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced deceased at the scene. None of the officers involved in the confrontation suffered injuries.

In light of the incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called upon to lead the investigation.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
