Delta Airlines Advances Sustainability Agenda: Unveils Strategic Roadmap for Greener Future
Delta Airlines is making significant strides towards achieving its environmental sustainability goals, as outlined by Chief Sustainability Officer Amelia DeLuca. The airline’s commitment to a greener future is underscored by a strategic roadmap introduced a year ago, aimed at achieving climate and sustainability ambitions.
DeLuca emphasized the importance of reducing emissions, particularly from jet fuel, which accounts for over 90% of Delta’s carbon footprint. In 2024, Delta aims to further reduce fuel consumption through policies and coalition building while driving cost efficiencies.
One notable initiative involves the reduction of single-use plastics on board. Delta is testing a new paper cup design expected to eliminate 7 million pounds of single-use plastics annually.
Delta’s sustainability strategy encompasses three key areas: influencing business decisions, engaging every role in sustainability efforts, and fostering collaboration. The airline has invested in fuel-efficient aircraft such as the A321neo and A220, with plans to expand its fleet of environmentally friendly planes.
Operational improvements driven by Delta’s Carbon Council have already saved 21 million gallons of fuel, with a goal of saving 45 million gallons by 2025. Additionally, Delta is committed to increasing its use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aiming for 10% usage by 2030.
The airline acknowledges the collective effort required to combat climate change, emphasizing collaboration with industry stakeholders, academia, and SAF startups. DeLuca highlighted partnerships with organizations like MIT and the Zero Impact Aviation Alliance as crucial for innovation in sustainable air transportation.
Despite being competitors, Delta recognizes the importance of sharing knowledge and resources with other airlines to advance sustainability goals collectively.
Overall, Delta remains dedicated to shaping a more sustainable future for air travel, guided by a long-term environmental sustainability strategy.
