Macon District Attorney’s Office Provides Updates on Investigation into Shooting of Caleb Hooten
On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Caleb Hooten was shot by a Peach County Deputy. The incident underwent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and was later brought to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office in January 2024 for review.
Since then, the District Attorney’s Office has been diligently evaluating the case. To ensure a comprehensive review of the facts and evidence, prosecutors have enlisted the assistance of an outside expert for video enhancement services and other case reviews. This process is anticipated to take two to three months to complete.
Throughout this period, District Attorney Anita Howard and members of the Victim Services Unit have maintained regular communication with Mr. Hooten’s family. This has included face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and other messaging platforms. Updates were most recently provided to the family on January 24, 2024, when DA Howard personally conveyed a rough timeline of the ongoing investigation.
In a departure from standard procedures, DA Howard herself frequently engages with crime victims and their families, extending this practice to families affected by incidents involving law enforcement.
Moving forward, the District Attorney’s Office remains committed to keeping Mr. Hooten’s family and the community informed about the progress of the investigation.
