Operation Skyhawk: Governor Kemp Announces Major Bust of Multi-State Criminal Network in Georgia

Governor Brian P. Kemp announced today the success of “Operation Skyhawk,” a joint effort between the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Gang Task Force, resulting in the shutdown of a sophisticated criminal enterprise operating across multiple states. The operation targeted individuals involved in smuggling contraband, including drugs and weapons, into GDC facilities.

The investigation, spanning several months, uncovered the use of drones to deliver contraband into correctional facilities. This led to the serving of search and arrest warrants at two locations in the Metro Atlanta area. As a result, 150 suspects, including eight GDC employees, were arrested, with over 1,000 criminal charges filed. Many of the individuals arrested will face Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) charges and charges related to participation in criminal gang activity.

GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver emphasized the zero-tolerance policy towards those endangering public safety and the integrity of correctional facilities. The operation, named “Skyhawk,” has confiscated a significant amount of contraband with a combined street value exceeding $7 million. Confiscated items include drones, weapons, cell phones, tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine, and various pills.

The success of “Operation Skyhawk” highlights the collaboration between law enforcement agencies and underscores the commitment to maintaining safety and security within correctional facilities and communities. It is believed that other states may also be impacted by the criminal enterprise, emphasizing the significance of the operation’s success in disrupting illicit activities across state lines.
