78-Year-Old Driver Dies After SUV Crashes Into Roof of Macon Home

MACON, Ga. – A 78-year-old man died Thursday morning after his SUV left the roadway and struck the rooftop of a residence in Macon, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. in the 1900 block of Woodland Drive.
Investigators determined that Willie H. Smith Jr., 78, was driving a white Chevrolet Equinox east on Waverland Drive near the intersection with Woodland Drive when he apparently lost control of the vehicle. The SUV then crashed into the rooftop of a residence.
Paramedics treated Smith at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Medical staff later pronounced him dead, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.
No other injuries were reported.
The circumstances that caused Smith to lose control remain under investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
