Two Sentenced in 2020 Macon Armed Robbery Plot That Left Man Dead

MACON, Ga. – Two defendants have been sentenced for their roles in a botched armed robbery that resulted in the fatal shooting of a Macon man inside his home more than six years ago.

Xytwuan Monjai Calloway and Shawn Robinson were each sentenced to 20 years, with nine years to serve in prison, in connection with the Jan. 30, 2020, killing of Johntaves Dangelo Coleman, according to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

The sentences resolve two of the remaining cases stemming from the killing. A third defendant, Terrance L. Ates, has been found incompetent to stand trial, and his case remains pending.

Coleman was at his Moreland Avenue home with three friends watching a basketball game when someone knocked on his door at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Coleman answered the door, and his friends then heard a single gunshot. He ran back inside the house and collapsed. None of the friends witnessed the shooting.

Coleman died shortly afterward from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Teen Confessed Three Days After Killing

Investigators received information from a neighborhood witness about a vehicle seen in the area around the time of the shooting. Surveillance cameras at a nearby store also captured the vehicle and four people getting in and out of it around the time Coleman was killed.

Three days after the shooting, then-17-year-old Johniya Latice Chappell came forward and admitted her involvement.

According to prosecutors, Chappell told investigators that she, Calloway, Robinson and Ates had planned to rob Coleman.

Chappell said she and Calloway approached Coleman’s home and Calloway rang the doorbell. When Coleman came to the door, Calloway ran away, startling Chappell and causing her to fire the shot that struck Coleman in the chest, according to her account to investigators.

Chappell then fled.

Prosecutors said Chappell already knew Coleman. During a difficult period in her life, Coleman had allowed her to stay at his home. He continued helping her with school supplies and money even after discovering that she had stolen from him.

Shooter Previously Sentenced to 50 Years

Chappell pleaded guilty on Aug. 14, 2023, to Voluntary Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault. She was sentenced to 50 years, with the first 25 years to be served in prison.

Calloway and Robinson were identified as accomplices in the planned armed robbery. Both have now received 20-year sentences, with nine years to serve.

“A robbery plot hatched among four people ended a man’s life, and today two more have answered for the roles they played,” District Attorney Anita Howard said.

Howard said the sentences demonstrate that those who plan and participate in an armed robbery can face serious consequences even when they are not the person who fires the fatal shot.

Ates’ case has not been resolved because he has been found incompetent to stand trial at this time. His case remains pending.
