Brunswick Man Arrested After Shooting in St. Simons Island’s Pier Village Leaves 19-Year-Old Wounded

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – A 25-year-old Brunswick man has been arrested after a shooting early Sunday morning in the Pier Village area of St. Simons Island that left a 19-year-old man wounded, according to the Glynn County Police Department.

Officers responded to Pier Village at approximately 12:54 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, after receiving reports of gunfire.

Investigators determined that a physical altercation had occurred in the area before the shooting.

Within minutes of the initial call, patrol officers encountered Sheldon Whorley, 25, of Brunswick. Police identified Whorley as the person who allegedly fired a handgun following the altercation.

Whorley was taken to the Glynn County Police Department and interviewed.

At that point in the investigation, officers had received no information indicating anyone had been struck by the gunfire.

Gunshot Victim Arrives at Hospital Hours Later

Several hours later, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a 19-year-old man arrived at the emergency room at Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick Campus suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said the man’s injury was non-life-threatening and investigators believe he was wounded during the earlier Pier Village shooting.

Following that development, Whorley was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. He was transported to the Glynn County Detention Center.

Police have not identified the 19-year-old victim or disclosed what allegedly led to the initial altercation. Authorities also have not said how many shots were fired or whether a firearm was recovered.

Investigators said the case remains active and warned that additional arrests and charges are possible as detectives identify other people involved and gather additional evidence.
