Bomb Threat at Cherokee Bluff High School May Have Been AI-Generated, Investigators Say
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bomb threat involving Cherokee Bluff High School, with investigators examining whether artificial intelligence may have been used to generate the threat.
Sheriff’s Office personnel, including explosive-detection K9 teams, responded to the school in the 6600 block of Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch.
Authorities are working with the Hall County School District to ensure the safety of students and staff while the threat is investigated.
As of the latest update, no explosive device had been discovered.
Investigators said the threat appears similar to threats received overnight involving schools in neighboring Jackson County. Authorities are treating each reported threat as legitimate until investigators can determine otherwise.
Investigators Examine Possible Use of AI
According to investigators, the series of threats may have been generated using artificial intelligence.
Hall County investigators are communicating with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as authorities work to determine the source of the threats.
Investigators are also examining whether AI-generated or cloned voices or messages may have been used to make the threats.
Authorities have not said what specific characteristics of the threats led investigators to suspect AI involvement, and the source of the threats has not been publicly identified.
The investigation comes amid broader warnings from the FBI about criminals increasingly using artificial intelligence to make fraudulent and malicious communications more convincing.
The FBI has previously warned that AI can enhance existing criminal schemes by increasing their speed, scale and level of automation. Publicly available and custom AI tools can also be used to create highly convincing messages tailored to particular targets.
Of particular concern are AI-powered voice and video cloning tools, which can imitate trusted individuals and create realistic audio or visual content. Such technology has been used in scams and other criminal activity to deceive victims.
In the Hall County case, however, investigators have not yet confirmed that AI was used. Authorities are working to determine whether cloned audio, AI-generated messages or other technology played a role.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said any reported threat will continue to be treated as legitimate until proven otherwise as the investigation into the school threats continues.
