Routine Traffic Stop in Fayette County Leads to Identity Theft, Forgery and Drug Arrests
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. A routine traffic stop by a Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputy led to the discovery of what investigators describe as an extensive identity theft and forgery operation, resulting in multiple felony charges against two people.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Crittenton stopped a vehicle after observing it traveling in the wrong lane.
During the investigation, deputies searched the vehicle and found multiple counterfeit identification cards from several states. Investigators said each identification card displayed the passenger’s photograph but was issued under different names.
Authorities also recovered numerous credit cards and stolen checks that corresponded to the false identities.
As deputies continued searching the vehicle, they found additional evidence that investigators believe was used in identity theft and forgery schemes, including forged checks, disguise items and notebooks containing repeatedly practiced signatures.
The search also uncovered illegal narcotics, including MDMA, methamphetamine and oxycodone, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both the driver and passenger were arrested and are facing multiple felony charges. Authorities have not yet released their identities or a complete list of charges.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation prevented what investigators believe could have been additional financial crimes targeting unsuspecting victims.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are possible.
